Block
Also known as: Block user, Ban from profile
Quick definition
Blocking is a moderation action where a user prevents another user from interacting with their account — the blocked user can't see posts, send DMs, follow, comment, or be tagged. Blocking is private; the blocked user isn't explicitly notified but learns by losing access to the blocker's content.

What is blocking?
Blocking is the strongest moderation action a regular user has on most platforms. When you block someone, the platform enforces a complete two-way disconnect: they can't see your posts, can't visit your profile, can't DM you, can't comment on your content, can't follow you, can't tag you in their posts, and can't be mentioned in yours. The block is bidirectional and private — you don't see their content either, and they're not explicitly notified that you blocked them (though they discover it by trying to interact and finding access removed).
Blocking is distinct from muting (which silences someone for you without affecting their access to your content) and reporting (which flags content for platform moderation review). All three serve different use cases.
When to block vs mute vs report
Three situations call for different responses. Block: persistent harassment, stalking, threats — anyone whose access to your account is itself a problem. Mute: someone whose content you don't want to see but who doesn't pose a threat (you don't need to cut them off completely). Report: content that violates platform community guidelines (different from interpersonal preference). The right response is often a combination — block + report for serious harassment.
Block effects on engagement metrics
Blocking removes the blocked user from your follower count instantly — if they were following you, they no longer are after the block. This is the only mechanism that lets you actively reduce your follower count. Some users have used mass-blocking strategically (after a viral post brought in unwanted attention, for example) to clean up their audience. Most analytics tools don't distinguish 'lost via block' from 'lost via unfollow' in the unfollow metric.
Frequently asked questions
Will the blocked user know they're blocked?+
Not via direct notification. They discover it by noticing they can't see your content, can't DM you, or can't visit your profile. If they're determined enough to test, the block becomes obvious; for casual users, it may go undetected for weeks.
Can a blocked user create a new account to get around the block?+
Technically yes — most platforms can't prevent determined evasion. Persistent harassers often create new accounts. The platforms increasingly use IP, device fingerprint, and behavior pattern detection to limit ban evasion, but it's not perfect.
Does blocking reduce my follower count?+
Yes if the blocked user was following you. The block automatically removes the follow relationship, lowering your gross follower count by 1. The same pattern works in reverse if you unblock: the unblocked user has to manually re-follow.
