Quick definition

Muting is a one-way moderation action that hides another user's content from your feed without affecting their access to yours. The muted user can still see your posts, follow you, DM you, and comment normally — they just don't show up in your timeline. Muting is private and softer than blocking.

What is muting?

Muting is a soft moderation action where you silence another user's content from your own feed without affecting their access to your account. After muting, you stop seeing their posts in your home feed, their Stories don't appear at the top, but they retain full ability to see your posts, follow you, DM you (depending on platform settings), and engage with your content. The mute is bidirectional in some platforms (X mute hides your tweets from them too) and one-way in others (Instagram mute is purely consumer-side).

Muting is private — the muted user receives no notification and has no way to detect the mute through normal usage. They simply continue to see your content and interact normally; you just don't see theirs.

When to mute vs block

Three signals favor muting over blocking. (1) The other user isn't a threat — they're just someone whose content you don't want to see (a coworker who posts a lot, a celebrity whose feed is dense). (2) You want to maintain civility — blocking signals strongly; muting is invisible. (3) You may want to re-engage in the future — muting is reversible without trace; blocking + unblocking sometimes resets the follow relationship.

Reserve blocking for harassment, threats, or persistent inappropriate behavior. Use muting for content-volume preferences and mild interpersonal friction.

Frequently asked questions

Will the muted user know they're muted?+

No. Mute is completely private. The muted user has no notification, no UI signal, no way to detect the mute through normal interactions.

Do I still get DMs from someone I muted?+

On most platforms yes — mute affects feed visibility, not DM delivery. To stop DMs from a specific person, you'd need to restrict (Instagram) or block them. Some platforms offer separate mute-DM settings.

Can I mute someone I don't follow?+

Yes on most platforms. Mute applies to whatever surfaces you'd otherwise see them on (Stories I follow, suggested content, etc.). You don't need to follow to mute.
