Tag
Also known as: Photo tag, User tag, People tag
Quick definition
A tag is a feature on Instagram, Facebook, and X that lets you label other users IN photos or videos — distinct from @-mentions in captions. Tagged users appear over the photo when viewers tap, the tagged users get notifications, and tagged accounts often receive a discoverability boost.

What is a tag (vs a mention)?
Tagging is labeling another user IN a photo or video — placing their handle on a specific point on the image. Tags differ from @-mentions in three ways. (1) Location — tags live on the photo itself, not in the caption. (2) Persistence — tagged photos appear in the tagged user's 'Tagged' section on their profile (Instagram, Facebook), not just as a notification. (3) Privacy controls — users can untag themselves from photos, control who's allowed to tag them, hide tagged photos from their profile.
Most photo-and-video platforms support tagging: Instagram (Photo tag, Product tag, Collab tag), Facebook (Photo tag), X (Tag in image), Pinterest (Pin source attribution as a soft form). TikTok and YouTube don't have a structured photo-tag concept the same way, though @-mentions in captions exist.
Why tagging drives discoverability
Two mechanics. First, tagged users receive notifications, often respond, and that engagement signal helps the post's algorithmic distribution. Second, the post appears in the tagged user's 'Tagged' section, where visitors to that user's profile may discover it. For brands tagging customers in UGC reposts, the tag both rewards the customer (free promotion) and exposes the customer's audience to the brand. Tagging is among the most effective audience-cross-pollination mechanics on Instagram.
Tagging etiquette
Three rules. (1) Tag only people who are actually IN the photo (Instagram and Facebook policy). (2) Don't tag celebrities for visibility hopes (it's spam, looks desperate, and the celebrities mass-untag). (3) For UGC reposts, tag the original creator AND mention them in the caption — both surfaces increase the chance they engage back. Tagging is most powerful when used genuinely; mass-tag spam patterns get accounts flagged.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between @-mention and tag?+
@-mention is in the caption (text that links to a profile). Tag is on the photo itself (label appearing when viewers tap the image). Both create notifications; tags also persist in the tagged user's 'Tagged Photos' section.
Can someone untag themselves from my photo?+
Yes on Instagram and Facebook. The original photo stays up, but the user is no longer tagged and the photo no longer appears in their Tagged section. They can also report the tag if it's spam.
How many tags per photo?+
Instagram allows 20 tags per single image. For carousels, each slide allows separate tags (10 slides × 20 tags = up to 200 tags total in a carousel, though that volume is rare and looks spammy).
Can I tag people via API?+
Limited. Instagram's Graph API supports product tags via API but per-person photo tags require the native app for most use cases. Some scheduling APIs (CodivUpload) expose tag fields where the platform supports them.
Schedule with collaborator + product tags
CodivUpload supports Instagram collaborator tags (instagram_collaborator_username), location tags (instagram_location_id), and product tags via the API. All exposed per-post.
