Aspect Ratio
Also known as: AR, Frame ratio
Quick definition
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between a video or image's width and height — expressed as W:H (e.g., 9:16 vertical, 16:9 horizontal, 1:1 square). Each social platform expects specific aspect ratios for each content type; mismatches result in cropping, letterboxing, or rejection.
What is aspect ratio?
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image or video's width and height, expressed as a ratio of two integers separated by a colon — 9:16 means a frame that's 9 units wide for every 16 units tall (vertical). 16:9 means 16 wide for 9 tall (horizontal/landscape). 1:1 means square. The same image can be rendered at any pixel resolution while keeping the aspect ratio constant; 1080×1920 and 720×1280 are both 9:16.
Different platforms and content types expect different aspect ratios. Get the ratio right and the content fits cleanly in the platform's UI; get it wrong and the platform either crops the content (cutting off important parts), letterboxes it (adds black bars), or rejects the upload entirely.
Standard aspect ratios per platform
Five ratios cover most modern social media. 9:16 (vertical) — TikTok, Instagram Reels, Stories, YouTube Shorts, Snapchat Spotlight. 1:1 (square) — Instagram Feed (legacy), some LinkedIn images. 4:5 (portrait) — Instagram Feed (current optimal), LinkedIn portrait posts. 16:9 (landscape) — YouTube long-form, Twitch, Facebook video, LinkedIn landscape. 1.91:1 (wide landscape) — Twitter/X images, link previews. Every other ratio is rare and platform-specific.
For cross-platform creators, the rule is: prepare content in 9:16 vertical (works for Reels, TikTok, Shorts, Stories) and have a separate 16:9 horizontal version for YouTube long-form. Most production tools (CapCut, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut) make ratio-switching trivial.
Frequently asked questions
Can I post a horizontal video as a Reel?+
Technically yes; visually no. Instagram crops or letterboxes horizontal video on Reels, making it look amateurish. Always shoot or re-edit to 9:16 for Reels.
What's the right aspect ratio for Instagram Feed in 2026?+
4:5 portrait (1080×1350) is currently optimal. It maximizes screen real estate on mobile (Instagram's primary surface). 1:1 square is fine but smaller. 16:9 landscape is the worst because Instagram crops aggressively.
What if I have one video that needs to work on multiple platforms?+
Shoot 9:16 vertical with safe-zone composition (keep important content in the center 70%). Then crop / re-export to 16:9 for YouTube and 1:1 for Feed. Most modern editing tools support multi-aspect export from a single source clip.
